St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Creation Care

St. Luke’s has a long history of caring for creation and the environment. We affirm the Episcopal Church’s Covenant for the Care of Creation:

“In Jesus, God so loved the whole world. We follow Jesus, so we love the world God loves. Concerned about the global climate emergency, drawing from a range of approaches for our diverse contexts, we commit to form and restore loving, liberating, life-giving relationships with all of Creation.”

Our care of creation has included a community garden (affectionately called “the SLUG” for St. Luke’s Urban Garden) which offered green space in our neighborhood, opportunities for sustainable living practices, and produced food for Edible Hope Kitchen and the Ballard Food Bank. the SLUG was removed as part of our Redevelopment, but rooftop raised garden beds now offer residents of St. Luke’s Apartments the chance to continue the tradition of gardening at St. Luke’s

Recognizing our impact on our local watershed and our proximity to Puget Sound, St. Luke’s was the largest RainWise Project in North Seattle when it was installed in 2018. Six cisterns and a rain garden keep roughly 84,000 gallons of stormwater out of the sewer system.

We are continuing our commitment to environmental sustainability and care of creation with our redevelopment. Solar panels will be installed on both new buildings on the property to help offset electricity usage and a grove of trees on our property will be preserved throughout construction and incorporated into the design of our new building.
